Darren Waller Retires from Football After One Season with the Giants
Giants TE Steps Away After Near-Death Experience
Waller Reveals Struggle with Mental Health
New York Giants tight end Darren Waller announced his retirement from football on Sunday, citing a near-death experience and ongoing mental health struggles. The 31-year-old made the announcement in a video posted to his social media accounts.
Waller, who spent the 2022 season with the Giants, said he had been contemplating retirement for several months. He revealed that he had a near-death experience after a game in 2021, which left him with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Waller also spoke about his struggles with depression and anxiety, which he said had been exacerbated by the physical demands of football. He said that he had decided to retire in order to focus on his mental health and well-being.
The Giants signed Waller to a three-year, $51 million extension in 2022, but he was limited to 11 games last season due to an ankle injury. His retirement frees up $11.6 million in salary-cap space for the Giants in the upcoming season.
