Yankees Activate Anthony Rizzo Off 60-Day IL, Make Flurry of Roster Moves

New York Yankees Activate Anthony Rizzo From 60-Day Injured List

The New York Yankees activated first baseman Anthony Rizzo from the 60-day injured list on Tuesday, and designated infielder Chris Owings for assignment in a corresponding move. Rizzo has been sidelined since late May with a lower back issue, but he has been on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre since July 29 and has appeared in five games.

Yankees Make Flurry of Roster Moves

In addition to activating Rizzo, the Yankees also made a number of other roster moves on Tuesday, as they prepare for a series with the Tampa Bay Rays at Yankee Stadium: * Recalled infielder/outfielder Miguel Andujar from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. * Optioned infielder/outfielder Ronald Guzman to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. * Designated right-handed pitcher Clarke Schmidt for assignment. * Released right-handed pitcher Lucas Luetge. Andujar has been one of the hottest hitters in the minor leagues this season, batting .325 with 23 home runs and 73 RBIs in 85 games for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He is expected to see time at first base, third base, and designated hitter for the Yankees. Guzman has struggled at the plate this season, batting just .191 with 10 home runs and 35 RBIs in 89 games for the Yankees. He is expected to continue to see time at first base and designated hitter for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Schmidt has pitched in 15 games for the Yankees this season, including 12 starts. He has a 5.83 ERA and 1.59 WHIP in 85 1/3 innings. He is expected to be claimed by another team on waivers. Luetge has pitched in 44 games for the Yankees this season, posting a 5.09 ERA and 1.48 WHIP in 35 1/3 innings. He is expected to sign a minor league deal with another team.
