Nakba Day Commemorated for First Time by United Nations
700,000 Palestinians Displaced on Catastrophe Day
Annual Commemoration of Loss and Displacement
For the first time, the United Nations will officially commemorate Nakba Day, the annual Palestinian remembrance of their displacement and loss during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.
Nakba Day, which is Arabic for "catastrophe," is observed on May 15, the day after the Gregorian calendar date for Israel's Independence Day. Palestinians commemorate the wars events and the displacement of around 700,000 Palestinians from their homes during the war.
In recent years, Palestinians have been protesting at Gaza's border with Israel in the lead-up to Nakba Day, which they consider the most mournful day in their calendar.
